Steps to a California life or health agent license
- Complete prelicensing education: the hours required for each license type plus a 12-hour course on ethics and the California Insurance Code (one 12-hour course covers several license types), under Insurance Code section 1749.
- Pass the state exam for each license type.
- Apply for the license with the California Department of Insurance.
Once licensed, agents complete 24 hours of continuing education before each renewal, 3 hours of it in ethics including one hour on insurance fraud (Insurance Code section 1749.3).
California's exams also test the general concepts: practice them with the Life & Health topic quizzes and the 100-question practice exam.
